Legacy report on the BOCA National Building Code/1999

DIVISION: 05-Metals
Section: 05500-Metal Fabrications

EVALUATION SUBJECT:

Extend-O-Column and Fixed Plate Column

MANUFACTURER:

Marshall Stamping Company
355 Glade Mills Road
Valencia, PA 16059

EVALUATION SCOPE
Compliance with the following code:
BOCA National Building Code/1999
Code Section 1707.1 General
Code Section 1710.1 General
Code Section 2203.1 General

1.0 DESCRIPTION OF EVALUATION
This report evaluates the use of Marshall Stamping Company's Extend-O-Column and Fixed Plate Column for axial compressive load capacity.

2.0 DESCRIPTION AND USE OF PRODUCT
Marshall Stamping Company's Extend-O-Column and Fixed Plate Columns are adjustable and fixed columns, respectively, constructed of ASTM A500 carbon steel with a minimum yield strength of 33 ksi (227 MPa) and an ultimate strength of 45 ksi (310 MPa). Both columns are intended for interior use in wood frame and light steel frame construction.

The diameter of the unfinished columns are 3" (76.2 mm), 3 1/2" (88.9 mm) and 4" (101.6 mm) OD and the steel thickness is 11 gage (0.1196", 3.03 mm). The 3 1/2" OD columns are also available in Schedule 40 (0.216", 5.48 mm) thickness.

2.1 Fixed Plate Column
The Fixed Plate Column is not adjustable. A 4" x 8" x 1/4" (101.6 mm x 203.2 mm x 6.35 mm) plate of ASTM A36 steel is welded to both ends. The column is shown in Figure 1.

2.2 Extended-O-Column
The Marshall Stamping Extend-O-Column is adjustable. A 4" x 8" x 1/4" plate of steel, which complies with ASTM A36, is welded to one end of the column, while the other end is attached to a screw jack. See Figure 2 and 3 for more details on the assembly. The column is permitted to be installed with the screw jack on the top or the bottom of the column.

3.0 CONDITIONS OF USE
This report is limited to the applications and products as stated in this report. The ICC-ES Subcommittee on National Codes intends that the report be used by the code official to determine that the report subject complies with the code requirements specifically addressed, provided that this product is installed in accordance with the following conditions:

3.1 Allowable loads shall be limited to vertical concentric loadings. The use of the column to resist lateral loads has not been evaluated within this report and, therefore, is outside the scope of this report.

3.2 The columns shall be fabricated and installed in accordance with this report and the manufacturer’s published installation instructions.

3.3 The threaded rod shall not be extended more than 6 1/2 inches (165 mm) when the Marshall Stamping Extend-O-Column is installed.

3.4 This report is subject to periodic re-examination. For information on the current status of this report, contact the ICC-ES.

4.0 INFORMATION SUBMITTED

4.1 The allowable loads listed in Table 1 through 3 reflect the following information submitted:

4.1.1 John Lokes, Jr., PE, State of Pennsylvania, dated February 8, 1986, and April 28, 1989.

Mr. Lokes performed calculations based on the 3" OD, 11 gage columns listed within this report. The calculations included an analysis of the effects of the threaded rod and collar plate on the carrying capacity of the Marshall Stamping Extend-O-Column.

4.1.2 Structural Calculations submitted by Mr. Andrew Kovacs, PA, State of Pennsylvania, dated March 19, 1994. Professional Services Industries, Inc., Lab. No. 828-36537 Phy-40437, dated April 22, 1994.

Mr. Kovacs performed calculations concerning the effect of the threaded rod and collar plate on the carrying capacity of the Marshall Stamping Extend-O-Column. The calculations were supported by testing of the screw mechanism and then by testing of the screw mechanism and shaft assembly. This testing verifies that the most restrictive allowable load for either the Fixed Plate Column or the Extend-O-Column is based on the calculations for the column itself, not the screw mechanism of the screw collar assembly.

4.1.3 Professional Services Industries, Inc. Lab. No. 828-36537 Phy-40437, dated April 22, 1994.

Compression testing by Professional Services Industries was completed on the screws and screw/collar assemblies in order to determine the ultimate load of the columns. The ultimate loads for the screw and the screw/collar assembly exceeded the allowable loads given in Tables 1, 2 and 3 by a safety factor of 2.5 or more.

5.0 INFORMATION REQUIRED ON CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS

To aid in the use of this report, the following represents the minimum level of information to be reflected on the construction documents in order to determine compliance with this report. Additional sections of the applicable codes and standards may apply based on the resulting design and configuration.

5.1 The language "See ICC-ES Legacy Report No. 94-95"

5.2 Column diameter, height, designation (fixed or adjustable), and location in the building.

5.3 Maximum allowable extension of the screw thread.

5.4 All building permit applications specifying Marshall Extend-O-Column and Marshall Fixed Plate Columns shall be accompanied by structural calculations. These structural calculations shall be signed and sealed by a registered design professional who is qualified to perform such work in accordance with the statutory requirements of the state in which construction is to take place.

The calculations shall address the following:

5.4.1 The transfer of design loads from structure to column to bearing surface below the column, through connections.

5.4.2 The ability of the column to carry these loads.

5.4.3 The ability of the bearing surface below the column to withstand these loads.

6.0 PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION

All Marshall Stamping Extend-O-Columns and Marshall Stamping Fixed Plate Columns manufactured in accordance with this report shall be marked at the plant with the manufacturer's name and model number along with the identifying language "See ICC-ES Legacy Report No. 94-54."

This report is subject to re-examination in two years.
