1.0 DESCRIPTION OF EVALUATION
This report evaluates the use of Marshall Stamping
Company's Extend-O-Column and Fixed Plate Column for axial
compressive load capacity.
2.0 DESCRIPTION AND USE OF PRODUCT
Marshall Stamping Company's Extend-O-Column and
Fixed Plate Columns are adjustable and fixed columns, respectively,
constructed of ASTM A500 carbon steel with a minimum yield
strength of 33 ksi (227 MPa) and an ultimate strength of
45 ksi (310 MPa). Both columns are intended for interior
use in wood frame and light steel frame construction.
The diameter of the unfinished columns are
3" (76.2 mm), 3 1/2" (88.9 mm) and 4" (101.6
mm) OD and the steel thickness is 11 gage (0.1196",
3.03 mm). The 3 1/2" OD columns are also available
in Schedule 40 (0.216", 5.48 mm) thickness.
2.1 Fixed Plate Column
The Fixed Plate Column is not adjustable. A 4"
x 8" x 1/4" (101.6 mm x 203.2 mm x 6.35 mm) plate
of ASTM A36 steel is welded to both ends. The column is
shown in Figure 1.

2.2 Extended-O-Column
The Marshall Stamping Extend-O-Column is adjustable.
A 4" x 8" x 1/4" plate of steel, which complies
with ASTM A36, is welded to one end of the column, while
the other end is attached to a screw jack. See Figure 2
and 3 for more details on the assembly. The column is permitted
to be installed with the screw jack on the top or the bottom
of the column.
3.0 CONDITIONS OF USE
This report is limited to the applications and
products as stated in this report. The ICC-ES Subcommittee
on National Codes intends that the report be used by the
code official to determine that the report subject complies
with the code requirements specifically addressed, provided
that this product is installed in accordance with the following
conditions:
3.1 Allowable loads shall
be limited to vertical concentric loadings. The use of the
column to resist lateral loads has not been evaluated within
this report and, therefore, is outside the scope of this
report.
3.2 The columns shall be
fabricated and installed in accordance with this report
and the manufacturer’s published installation instructions.
3.3 The threaded rod shall
not be extended more than 6 1/2 inches (165 mm) when the
Marshall Stamping Extend-O-Column is installed.
3.4 This report is subject
to periodic re-examination. For information on the current
status of this report, contact the ICC-ES.
4.0 INFORMATION SUBMITTED
4.1 The allowable loads listed
in Table 1 through 3 reflect the following information submitted:
4.1.1 John Lokes, Jr., PE,
State of Pennsylvania, dated February 8, 1986, and April
28, 1989.
Mr. Lokes performed calculations based on
the 3" OD, 11 gage columns listed within this report.
The calculations included an analysis of the effects of
the threaded rod and collar plate on the carrying capacity
of the Marshall Stamping Extend-O-Column. |
